Churchill Students Cycle for Charity

TEENAGERS pedaled their way across the country to raise thousands of pounds for a Tyneside charity.

The team of 12 from Churchill Community College, in Wallsend, North Tyneside, saw in the start of their summer break by mounting bikes and cycling the 210-mile coast-to-coast route from Whitehaven, in Cumbria, to Tynemouth.

And they used their fundraising flair to collectively raise more than £2,000 for Gosforth-based St Oswald’s Hospice.

Sarah Edwards, skills and enterprise leader at the college, spearheaded the project in a bid to boost the youngsters’ organisational skills while also helping to raise much-needed money for the palliative care hospice.
She said: “We really wanted the students to do a sports challenge and thought this was a great opportunity.

“The hills were very tough but the students showed determination, commitment and motivation throughout. It really opened their eyes to what they can accomplish.”

It was no easy feat for the students, who are all aged between 14 and 18, as they tackled up to 50 miles a day in scorching heat
