Dear Parents and Carers

Over the next four weeks students in years 7 and 8 are being asked to create a short speech to help to demonstrate their oracy skills.  As with the Conversation Calendars, which we launched a few weeks ago, all of the information that students need will be posted into their Google Classrooms.  If your child is in either year 7 or year 8, please read the brief outline below so that you will know what we are asking students to do.

Year 8 Students

Last year, year 8 students worked on their Ignite speeches with their tutors during registration time and then performed these to their tutor groups in the summer term.  This was an excellent experience and we were so proud of all of the students who performed brilliant speeches on a wide range of different subjects.  Ordinarily, this year, students in Y8 would have worked with their tutors to complete their Reignite speech, which has a particular focus on Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream’ speech from 1963.  However, due to the current situation, this will now be planned and performed at home and we are asking students to do this from Monday 1st June through to Friday 12th June 2020.  Each day (excluding Saturday and Sunday) a new short video will be released for students that they should use to help them with their speeches.  All of the information and resources they need can be found in their Google Classroom under the topic Reignite Speech and a new assignment will be posted each day with instructions for them to follow.

Year 7 Students

During their first year at Churchill Community College, year 7 students are asked to use their oracy skills to plan and perform a short speech with the help of their registration tutors.  Students would then perform these to their tutor groups.  Unfortunately, we are unable to do this this year however we still would like students to plan and perform their speech from home.  Students are being asked to do this over a two week period, from Monday 15th June to Friday 26th June 2020.  Each day (excluding Saturday and Sunday) a new short video will be released for students that they should use to help them with their speeches.  All of the information and resources they need can be found in their Google Classroom under the topic Ignite Speech and a new assignment will be posted each day with instructions for them to follow.

How can you help?

Each day students will watch the short video and then complete a short task linked to what they have seen that will help them to produce their speech over the two weeks.  It would be helpful if you could check in on their progress and ask them what they have been looking at each day.  Towards the end of the second week they will be writing and perfecting their speeches and your help in seeing how they are doing will be very important.

Lastly on the final day (Friday 12th June for year 8 students and Friday 26th June for year 7 students) we are asking students to perform their speech and to record these and submit them to us so that we can see them too.  We would really appreciate it if you could help with this so that students have an audience but can also focus on their speeches and not holding a camera.

Many thanks for your help and support and should you have any questions please contact Mr Ludlow on richard.ludlow@churchillcc.org.
