Subject overview

Textiles is about understanding the design process and how to use fabric to construct an appropriate design outcome.

 In Textiles we explore surface decoration,construction, market research,design and careers.

Key Stage 3
Content Year 7

 

Students have a double lesson (100 minutes) of Food/Textiles a week in Year 7.  This works out as approximately a term and a half in each subject area.

Year 8

Please note, students study Technology (DT, Food and Textiles) on a rotation basis.  This works out as the equivalent of a term in each subject area.  Projects then repeat with each group.

Autumn term 1 Induction – Health & Safety, Design Ideas and an introduction to Fibres and Fabrics. Rotation 1 – iPad Cover, Client centred brief, market research, design ideas. Surface decoration Applique, paint, batik embroidery and embellishment fabric manipulation.
Autumn term 2 Fibres and Fabrics continued – functions and properties.

Felting – students learn how to make felt using needlepoint and create a keyring

Rotation 1 – Careers in Textiles, Links to other subjects, career opportunities, team work and presentation skills, existing designers and possible careers paths.
Spring term 1 Surface Decoration –  Applique,  printing,Batik Embroidery and embellishment. Rotation 2 –  iPad Cover, Client centred brief, market research, design ideas. Surface decoration Applique, paint, batik embroidery and embellishment fabric manipulation.
Spring term 2 Surface Decoration continued Rotation 2 – Careers in Textiles Careers in Textiles, Links to other subjects, career opportunities, team work and presentation skills, existing designers and possible careers paths.
Summer term 1 Liberty London — Print and garment design. Fashion Illustration Rotation 3 –  iPad Cover, Client centred brief, market research, design ideas. Surface decoration Applique, paint, batik embroidery and embellishment fabric manipulation.
Summer term 2 Liberty London — Print and garment design. Fashion Illustration Rotation 4 – iPad Cover  iPad Cover, Client centred brief, market research, design ideas. Surface decoration Applique, paint, batik embroidery and embellishment fabric manipulation.
Key Stage 4
Content Year 9 Year 10 Year 11
Autumn term 1  

GCSE Textiles is currently not running in Years 9 or 10.  (2017/2018 )

Autumn term 2 Design ideas and developing textiles techniques
Spring term 1 Creating a final garment, textiles techniques.

How can parents support their child’s progress in this subject?
