Subject overview

Our main aim in the art department is to develop our students love and enjoyment of the subject. We teach students how to research, develop ideas, experiment with materials, analyse artists work, create a final outcome and evaluate their work. Projects are relevant, interesting, inspired by a range of artists, craftspeople, designers or cultures and encourage creativity. These often change according to the particular needs and interests of the class. Independent study is set regularly and students complete a wide variety of tasks that allow them to challenge themselves no matter what their artistic ability is.

Students at KS3 engage with a wide variety of art materials and complete mini projects which may include Sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting, image manipulation and printmaking. This gives them a range of experiences and build on the necessary skills required at GCSE.

We run both Photography and Art and Design at GCSE. Students develop a personal portfolio of work in Yrs. 9 and 10 which offer an element of personal choice but are firmly based in developing skills before they independently select their own themes, artists, materials and outcomes throughout Yr 11.

At KS5 students study AS / A2 level Art and Design and further develop their independent practice, research and communication.
